Literature Criticism Online

Literature Criticism Online contains collected literature criticism.  LCO is an excellent source for locating scholarly online critical analysis of literary characters, themes, etc.

Each of the titles indexed is a multi-volume set of "encyclopedias" of literary criticism, focusing on literature from a particular time period or a particular genre of literature (poetry, short stories, etc.)

Inside each volume, there are large entries (20+ pages) under the name of the author.

Within each entry a group of critical essays and reviews that were previously published in other places (for ex: The Sewanee Review or The Southern Literary Journal) are compiled together. General overview information about the author is also included: their principal works, biographical information, and a general critical response to their work is reviewed at the beginning of each entry.

Start with an Advanced Search to search by Keyword, Name of Work, Person-By or About, Author of Article, etc.

Start by finding large entries (20+ pages) of material under the name of the author. Look within an entry to find critical essays relating to a particular title or theme by that author.

Literature Criticism Sets

The Gale Literary Indexes compile excerpts of criticism (critical summaries) for a given author's work and are available for poetry and short stories as well as major fiction. Each Encyclopedia set is listed as a "Series". Select one or more sets "by Series" from the drop-down menu or search all sets simultaneously.
