Literary criticism can be defined as the knowledgeable evaluation or analysis of literature; including observations on theme, symbol, and structure. It is analysis which explains a literary text and thus makes its meaning more clear or, discovers meanings that have not been perceived before.

In Composition 2 (ENC1102) instructors often require students to locate sources of literary criticism as opposed to book reviews or plot summaries. Literary criticism can be found in a number of different sources including books/eBooks and literary journals.
