  Finding Articles

Unlike the open Internet, the databases are paid content accessible via the EFSC Libraries. These are credible resources that you use for your research. Each database covers a specific subject or field of study, and articles come from various publications within a database.

Did you know the New York Times Historical allows you to access news articles that go back to 1851?  Yes! It can be found under "News and Current Events" or alphabetically by name.

Need an idea for a paper? Try Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center or CQ Researcher.

For reference resources: try selecting the "By Subject" tab and then choose "Reference, Dictionaries, and Encyclopedias." There is also the Virtual Reference Shelf.

Use these search tips when searching for articles:

  • Use AND to refine your search and narrow the number of results.  Example: nursing AND shortage

  • To search a phrase, enclose the term in quotation marks. Example: "alternative medicine"

  • To find all possible word endings add *. Example: infect* finds infects, infected, infection, infecting, etc.

  • Too many results? Search the terms in the subject field, rather than all search fields.

  • Still can't find what you need? Email Ask-A-Librarian.

Google Scholar can be used to locate free online scholarly publications such as peer-reviewed papers, books, abstracts and articles from a variety of academic sources.

Under Settings, if you set library links, Google Scholar will link to documents with the full text content in select EFSC subscription databases.
