eBooks @ the EFSC Libraries

EFSC Libraries & EBSCO eBooks

EFSC Libraries have access to thousands of eBooks through eBook Collection (EBSCO)

EBSCO eBooks cover all disciplines and are indexed in Primo (the online library catalog) by author, subject, and title.

EBSCO eBooks can be:

  • Viewed on a student's home computer
  • Viewed on a campus library computer
  • Downloaded to a computer or mobile reading device

Creating a My EBSCOhost Profile

From any EBSCO database, you can set up a personal EBSCOHost Account which allows you to:

  • Organize your research in folders saved online
  • Save and retrieve your images and articles
  • Create email alerts for newly added materials matching your search criteria
  • Take notes on eBooks and save them to your My EBSCOhost folder for later viewing
  • View titles of any downloaded eBooks

Check out the instructions on How to Create and Manage a MyEBSCO Account. This account/profile will apply to any EBSCO database. For more details, view the My EBSCOhost tutorial.

EBSCO eBook & eAudiobook Checkout Policy

Many eBooks are limited to being used by one user at a time. There may be times that a title is not available and a “Sorry, this eBook is in use” message is displayed because that title’s user limit has been reached.

eBooks that are being viewed online can be “closed” and made available to other users, by clicking the Result List, New Search, Back, or Exit links in the eBook Viewer.

If an eBook is left “open” in a browser window but is no longer being used, then the eBook becomes available to other users after the last user’s EBSCOhost session expires (30 minutes, by default) and the system confirms that they haven’t used the title in 5 minutes (for a total of up to 35 minutes).

Downloading EBSCO eBooks to your home computer

Many EFSC Library EBSCO eBooks can be downloaded to your home computer and transferred to a mobile device.

Note: it is not necessary to download eBooks to view and use them for research.  Downloading simply gives you the added ability to read and work with eBooks offline on a home computer or eBook reader.

  1. Set up a My EBSCOhost account if you do not already have one.
  2. Download Adobe Digital Editions to your home computer, if you do not already have it installed.
  3. Find a book in the EBSCO eBook Collection that is downloadable and click the Download This eBook (Offline) link.
  4. Select a Checkout period from the drop-down menu and click the Checkout & Download button. If you are not logged into your My EBSCOhost folder, you will be prompted to do so. The eBook is added to the Checkout area of the folder, accessible from the upper-right corner of the EBSCOhost interface.
  5. Select Open with or Save File from the resulting dialog box. If you select Open with, your eBook is opened and displayed with Adobe® Digital Editions. If you select Save file, the eBook is saved to your computer and can be opened with Adobe® Digital Editions at a later time.
