Article Search Tips

  •  Use AND to refine your search and narrow the number of results.  Example: alternative energy AND hydrogen

  • To search a phrase, enclose the term in quotation marks. Example: "alternative energy"

  • To find all possible word endings add an asterisk*  Example: infect* would find infects, infected, infection, infecting, etc.

  • Too many results? search the terms in the subject field, rather than all fields.

How do I look for information?

Once you have selected a topic and before you start searching for resources, it is helpful to perform these steps:

Step 1: Break the topic into main concepts:
teenage

Step 2: Brainstorm keywords for each concept:
Try thinking of synonyms and related terms. A thesaurus may be helpful.

Step 3: Combine your terms in a search

For additional information on combining terms in a Boolean search, refer to the Search Strategies module in BILT.

Literature Criticism Search Tips

1. To get the most focused database search select the Advanced Search option.

2. Put the title of your work in quotes to narrow your search results.
 Example: "Everyday Use"

3. Limit your search to fulltext whenever available so you can view the entire article.

4. In several of the literature databases there are tabs across the top on the results page so you can sort literary criticism from author biographical information and book reviews.

Once you're on the homepage, there are many resources to help you.

You can look for a Book by first clicking on the "Click to Search the Library" button:

Now you can enter search term(s) on the search lines and choose "Books" from the "Material Types" dropdown on the right side.

Once you have a list of results, you can limit for Print Books ("Available on Shelf") or for eBooks ("Available Online") by choosing one of those limiters on the left side:

You can choose to search for just Articles, too.

From the Library Catalog "Advanced Search" page, you can limit to Articles in two places:

You also can choose to search for articles from our Databases.
