Selecting a License for When Adapting/Remixing Materials
Works that are adaptation/remix mixes combine separate sources into a whole. These adaptations are different from collections.
Use the following chart when you are adapting/remixing multiple CC licensed materials. In the left column, find the license of the work you are adapting. The correspond Adapter's Licenses from the top row that are shaded green, indicate which license your contributions may be licensed under. Creative Commons does not recommend licenses where the corresponding box is yellow.
To select which license your contributions may be licensed, under consider the following:
If you are adapting a Public Domain (PD) license, you may license your contributions under the following licenses: BY, BY-NC, BY-NC-ND, BY-NC-SA, BY-ND, BY-SA and PD.
If you are adapting a BY license, you may license your contributions under the following licenses: BY, BY-NC, BY-NC-ND, BY-NC-SA, BY-ND, and BY-SA.
If you are adapting a BY-NC license, you may license your contributions under the following licenses: BY-NC, BY-NC-ND, and BY-NC-SA.
If you are adapting a BY-NC-SA license, you may license your contributions under the following license: BY-NC-SA.
If you are adapting a BY-SA license, you may license your contributions under the following license: BY-SA.
Selecting a License for a Collection
Unlike an adaptation/remix, a collection is group of licensed works that remain separate in the new creation. These could be a collection of individual stories with individual licenses. In the left column, find the license of the work you are adapting. The corresponding commercial/non-commercial notation from the top row, are shaded green, indicating which license your contributions to the collection may be licensed under.
If the original work is PD or BY, you may use any Commercial or NonCommercial License
If the original work is BY-NC, BY-NC-ND, BY-NC-SA, you may only use a Non-commercial license
If the original work is BY-ND, BY-SA, you may use any Commercial or NonCommercial License.
Combining Compatible Creative Commons Licenses
The following chart will help when remixing (adapting) multiple licenses. Find one work's license in the left column and the other work's license in the top row. If there is a check mark in the intersecting box, then the two licenses may be remixed. If there is an X in the intersecting box then the works may not be remixed unless there is an exception.
